The overall experience is sweet and lush, but Oban 14 finishes on a welcome bright, acidic note, like apple cider with lemon, or brioche topped with zingy lemon curd. Oban 14 Year Old is part of the Classic Malts collection of Diageo, and it’s a fair billing. It’s one of those single malt expressions that most Scotch fans are familiar with, and it sells well. Nose: Smoky, maritime nose with hints of sticking plasters and toffee brittle. Palate: Smoky, creamy palate with notes of marmalade, toffee apples and pear cider. A development of cloves comes late palate. Finish: A long, malty finish with toasty oak and spice.
OBAN 14 Year Old. The distillery is at the heart of Oban – “Gateway to the Isles”. In effect, the town grew up around the distillery, founded by John and Hug Stevenson in 1794. Oban’s attractive West Highland character reflects its location, revealing aspects of both the Highland and the Island styles.
